Another superstar in soccer who brought the 3-4 defenses to the NFL would be Bum Phillips. He used the 3-4 defense plenty when he was still the defensive coordinator of the Houston Oilers. That was before he got the position as head coaching job of the team.

A couple of months I was hired by a major university of several candidates for education and training and the position of the next head football coach. I went through the normal channels, talking to a number of players, coaches and others who had worked or played with them and against them. Did not take long for some candidates to leave the rest of the field. Not surprisingly, two of the coaches who came out on top of my evaluation are now head coaches at the University of Michigan and the University of Miami, respectively.

This made them less attractive to me as I was working with the university does not want to risk getting stuck in the coaching carousel. Brady Hoke was on top of my list and the only drawback I found in him was that he wanted to be a day the coach of the University of Michigan. Obviously, this does not come into play negative when the University of Michigan is doing the hiring. Coaches and players lit up when I asked about Hoke and was told repeatedly that people like working with him and play with him. I have also heard over and over again that is a good boy rentals and foundations – this could be the most underrated as a coach and led to the downfall of a lot of otherwise good coaches. Fans and many administrators have been in love with renowned coaches and 5 star recruits. But more important is how the coach or the player is registered in your program. Rica Rodriguez has been a renowned coach, but was never really a good fit at Michigan. Bobby Knight is a good basketball coach and was a great fit at the University of Indiana, but I’m pretty sure it would be a disaster in a program like Cal-Berkeley or UCLA.

Some coaches simply better suited to some places than others. Many schools and teams make the mistake of trying to hire the best coach available, but the best coach for them. Jim Harbaugh would be ideal for a rental of Michigan, but realistically, how long he had been there before bolting to the NFL? To me Jim Harbaugh as a coach, after all, I think Brady Hoke is the right man at the right time and, finally, a better choice for Michigan. In a few years would not surprise me if most Michigan fans agree with me.
